[review] Argento Soma (series)

Argento Soma
First, I don’t know exactly if it’s argento, or arhento. I’m not even sure what it means – I’m inclined to think it’s simply “agent”… as in agent Soma. But I could be wrong. How do I put this? Soma is a pretty interesting piece of work. The development is good. And I don’t recall watching an anime with a similar concept (mecha aside) story-wise. The protagonist is Takuto, who is some sort of chemical engineer or scientist (hell at some point I even thought he was an astronaut) who joins reluctantly, upon his girlfriend’s request, with an organization called Morgue. Morgue’s project was to revive an “alien” which was pieced together, and learn from it. Purely an admirable academic goal if you ask me. The story complicates itself when something goes wrong in the reanimation process: the alien is revived, but gets his girlfriend, Maki, (and everyone else) killed and Takuto himself badly injured. The plot thickens when he is given a second chance of living by some mysterious person on the condition that he joins this certain organization called “Funeral,” which specializes in the elimination of aliens. Of course Takuto blames everything on the alien and agrees without hesitation. Thus the story develops. If you think I’ve said too much in that intro, then you are sorely mistaken, that’s just the tip of the iceberg ladies and gentlemen, which should be proof enough that Arhento Soma is one content-driven anime series. So much is to be discovered when watching it. So many twists and “what the hell?”s are to be experienced. If it’s a good, gripping and mildly confusing ride you’re looking for, then this might be good for you. I also think the animation was excellent.it had that Noir-type of simplicity of illustration, yet very effective. The treatment was also excellent, this is a very serious anime which doesn’t intend to make people laugh, which I admire; most of the anime sell nowadays because of the humor, which negates the need for caontent. So I would definitely recommend this anime for the viewers out there |
