I finally got to watch this series and i’m glad i did.

For me, it kinda got the hype as Fushigi Yuugi¹ had – so I was a little bit skeptical with regards to it’s appeal. But was I ever so wrong!

Ayashi no Ceres

Cue omnipotent voiceover: It’s about legend and lore… It’s about love… It’s about protecting that which is most valuable…

It basically boils down to this: A celestial being is trapped in this world and begins to act when its “host” turned a certain age. And a huge corporation wants control of that being (or it’s power). To find out all the whys, whats and hows. . . you’d have to watch it yourself.

For some bonus info however; it’s based on a legend (dunno if there’s actually a legend like that or just made up for the sake of the anime) – and the main characters involved are descendants of whoever is in the legend. Pretty interesting eh? Nothing like the good ol’ discovery-of-one’s-roots formula.

Again, the term “don’t get me wrong,” which I love to use must be… er… used. This is one good piece of work, I won’t deny the fact that it could be compared to Fushigi Yuugi on the grounds of both being a somewhat soap opera meets supernatural power thing going on the whole time. But I bet my liver ANC does a really good job at being neutral about it. What I mean to say is that if you were just after the action or something, then you’d still find your share in it. Same goes for comic relief. And of course there’s love for the truly hopeless romantics out there.

The animation is stunning, it’s like a really refined version of FY methinks. How the plot unfolded is also well paced in my opinion. For lack of a better comparison to describe it, then I’d say it was a “corrected version of FY,” they just threw away the junk and stayed with the good stuff and made it a point not to drag your ass along the way.
