For some inexplicable reason, I got myself a toy today. I was supposed to get 2 spindles of CD-ROMs so I could burn of a ton of stuff from my hard disk, but I ended up getting this (which cost an awful lot more):

Transformers (Masterpiece Series) Optimus Prime

This is a 20th anniversary release of our favorite transformer… and it may very well be THE Transformer ever made thus far.

What more can be said about this toy? It is truly worthy of the Masterpiece title. The Masterpiece Convoy is the product of 3 years of development. It is the Optimus Prime you always wanted. This is the Japanese release by Takara, so we have to call him Convoy in this review.

Convoy is full of die cast. The lower legs and chest are solid. Every joint is satisfyingly tight and clicky and most joints have hydraulics. The wheels have suspension, and the tires are actual rubber. He comes with a gun, an axe and a miniature Megatron pistol. as well as the matrix of leadership, which fits snugly in his chest. You can move a lever on the back of his head to make his mouthpiece move up and down to simulate talking.

Articulation is just the half of it… this baby’s fully transformable – though it’d seriously take a bit of time.

I’m almost sure that no matter how mechanically inclined you are, you will be forced read the manual, as the process is tricky. You could try to wing it… but at 7k PhP, I doubt you’d even dare to.

Oh and by the way, that trailer you saw is the only thing I have against this perfect product, as it is made of cardboard. Even the first Optimus Prime toy had a decent plastic trailer which had this cool thingie inside of it. Oh well, such is life.
