Trinity Blood anime
2005.08.01 9:39 AM
I’ve downloaded some episodes of this new anime called “Trinity Blood” and I’m so glad I did! This is the sort of anime you get when you mash up Trigun with Hellsing. It takes the better concepts from each and blends them together so well that you’d forgive the “lack of originality.” And of course that’s not yet counting the fact that there are more episodes to come that may improve on them, putting the series in a category of its own. Moderate spoilers of the three mentioned anime series below.
TrigunThe protagonist Vash1, starts off as an unknown, comical, clueless simpleton who is harmless as harmless can be – he hardly draws his gun2, but always gets into a lot of trouble through no intention of his own. The first half of the series is more of a comedy depicting how unlucky our hero is, and progresses to confirm that he is indeed Vash the Stampede, and then further progresses to a very serious plot twist that reveals his dark past (and the reason why he chooses to be such a carefree, clueless, peaceful individual). HellsingThis series on the otherhand is mysterious all the way, and was never fully resolved as far as the true nature of Alucard3, the protagonist, is concerned. He is part of an old secret organization that protects humanity from the threat of the Vampires by using one of (or beyond) their own against them (in this case, it’s Alucard). The nuance of the story here is some sort of special power he uses (as all animes usually have) as a trump card. This is manifested in the form of “releasing restrictions” – which means Alucard’s true power is being limited of his own volition. Trinity BloodSo here’s where Trinity Blood comes in. The protagonist is a Mr./Sir/Father Abel Nightroad, a travelling priest from the Vatican, who at the very first episode seems to have been put into an unlucky situation where the [flying] ship he was on is hijacked and made to crash (by a vampire… hmmmm). He both manages to encounter and escape this vampire by a series of lucky clumsy breaks4. At the end of the episode he defeats the vampire (when finally alone) by his own version of releasing restrictions5 Throughout the storyline in the early episodes, there are a lot of details explaining the fact that our Reverend (Nightroad) is also part of an order that protects humanity in the shadows (again, Hellsing)… tightly intertwined with the Vatican itself. Other amusing (or even ridiculous) details is that the Pope himself (who is a kid) and his advisors are directly in command of this “operation.” Anyways, enough of the primer. The series already got me at the whole Trigun-Hellsing mash-up.
