Blood+

Blood+ (pronounced Blood plus) is about an adopted girl/woman named Saya, who thought she was normal, until she had to face some monster one day and found out that she alone had the power to dispose of them… through her blood.

This incident sparks a landslide of discoveries that ultimately lead to the reality of her past, and her destiny.

Blood the Last Vampire, was the very first anime I decided to review years ago. From the looks of it, this series is the series version of it – spanning to about 50 episodes.

The “character” in both the movie and the series have totally different dispositions. Or at least the Saya from the movie seemed similar to the Saya at the latter half of the series (very detached, serious, brooding, etc.) Maybe the movie timeline took place before or after everything, but it would also be possible it may have happened during that latter half of the series. Of course another obvious difference is the presence of a bunch of secondary characters and sub-plots (duh!)

But assuming both stories are about the same character [Saya], then I can say that all of the unanswered questions the movie left years ago were finally answered here – so all is good.

It could’ve been shorter though. I probably would be the last guy to say you should shorten something because I enjoy a long, properly developed series as much as the next guy, but because of current trends in anime series¹ I’ve feared that they might be stretching the number of episodes just for the sake of having a long series. I found myself being able to not give my full attention while watching and still follow the story – this is an indicator that there are a lot of useless scenes, sub-plots that they could’ve done without. The good thing about it though, is that they never strayed from the main storyline.²

I’d recommend this to anyone who has the patience of watching 50 episodes and has no problem with serious storylines. The soundtrack is not bad as well, aside from the fact that the whole Opera thing at the end gets old really quick.
